Romans 8: 1-2: You have the power to overcome sin in your life part 1.

Updated: Jan 22, 2023

Romans 8:1-2 (New Living Translation)

“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death”.

“What the Word is saying”

Once you have given your life to Jesus, He gives you the “power” over the sin in your life. No longer are you bound to the impulse that drives you to continue to sin. The Word tells us that “So if the Son (Jesus) sets you free, you are truly free” (John 8:36, NLT). Most of us do not walk in that freedom. We go to church, pray, and seek righteousness. But we do not believe the truth that once we confess our sin, Jesus breaks the chain that binds us to that sin. Instead, we pick up those chains and put them back together and enter back into bondage.

I myself have fallen victim to this. I was bound by the sin of pornography. I told myself lies that since my sin only hurt it myself it was not hurting others. However, since the Holy Spirit lives within me I was corrupting the temple of my heart and mind that HE abides in. This hurt my growth in the ways of God and my view of women. With the advent of technology and the internet the task of obtaining porn is incredibly easy. This allowed me to entertain my impulse to sin without anyone’s knowledge. Paradoxically, I was also bound in guilt over the addiction that porn had in my life. So, the impulse although it brought momentary pleasure, it weighted me down with the failure to resist it. That was until the Lord showed me that I could overcome it, because he had already set me free from it. Initially it was relying on the Holy Spirit to impower me to resist the temptation. Replacing my desire with the reading of the word and prayer. Then after time the temptation no longer had the hold on me. To be free from that bondage is a blessing and one I could not have achieved on my own.

Therefore, let me say again that like me you are no longer bound to the sin that has plagued you. Give it to Jesus and ask Him to help you through the Power of the Holy Spirit to walk in that freedom.

If you have not given your life to Jesus let me implore you to do so now. The bible says you must “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved” (Romans 10:9-10, NLT). Therefore, pray this prayer aloud now, right where you are: “Jesus, I believe you are Lord and I believe that you died on a cross, and God raised you from the dead”. If you prayed this prayer, please respond to this blog and someone will contact you. Also, I encourage you to pray and ask the Lord to show you where you should attend a church. There may be someone you know that is a believer, someone who can lead you to a place where God can grow you in your newfound faith.
